SALT COUNCIL

The Downers Grove Township Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) Council is a consortium of local law enforcement, fire protection, governmental and community agencies, as well as senior citizens, with a shared goal of improving the quality of life and home safety of older persons in their homes and in the community. The group meets four times a year at different locations in the township. Since the establishment of the S.A.L.T. Council in 1998, we have been offering to the community valuable programs which include the “File of Life” emergency medical information kits and a home inspection program (HITS).

A File of Life kit contains a standardized medical information card in a magnetic pouch which is designed to be placed on the front of a refrigerator. There is also a smaller card and pouch to be carried in a purse or wallet. These cards will help police and emergency response teams have instant access to medical information and therefore be able to act more quickly in emergency situations. Each kit comes with instructions on how to complete and maintain the medical information on the cards. Several thousand kits have already been distributed. They are available at the township office and several other locations around the township. A $1 donation is requested. Please call the Township office at (630) 968-6408.

The home inspection program provides senior citizens with a free inspection of their homes by trained professionals who recommend simple guidelines for home safety and security. Team members represent police departments, fire departments and health agencies. The goal of this safety program is to identify features in your home, or daily routines that might make your home susceptible for burglaries, fires or injuries due to falls. You will be advised of steps you can take to eliminate or reduce these hazards. You will also be provided with a written report and given referrals for low-cost maintenance professionals. The HITS Program offers recommendations only – no subsequent inspections are required. Please call the Township office at (630) 968-6408.
