GENERAL DESCRIPTION & BACKGROUND
This position focuses on the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse through a life skills program that targets youth in grades 5th through 8th. Downers Grove Township covers several communities in the Downers Grove/Hinsdale area, and provides life skills programs to numerous middle and junior high schools.
This worker will be one of two life skills teachers in an eight-person Township Human Services staff team who serve local youth, parents, and senior citizens with programs that are based on education and social development. (The agency does not do counseling.) Staff members have individual responsibilities but may work together on general tasks and assist as needed in other program areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. The life skills teacher will assist the Youth Education Coordinator in the development and implementation of the life skills curriculum for grades five through eight at 14 Township Junior High and Middle Schools.
2. Remain current on research and statistics related to child and adolescent development and all life skills topics taught in the program.
3. Work under the direction of the Youth Education Coordinator to consistently maintain and update life skills curriculum with current research.
4. The worker will be involved in selected community organizations and coalitions to provide information, promote best practices in prevention, and assist in the development of effective networking.
5. The worker will be a knowledgeable general information and referral resource on prevention topics for human service workers, community leaders, and the public.
6. Attend monthly Youth & Family Advisory Committee meetings and Youth Service staff meetings as scheduled.
