The Illinois Compiled Statutes guide Downers Grove Township, defining our mission and focusing our resources on very specific purposes. When township funds are expended in support of senior services, we forward the cause of improving the climate of living for our older adults. At our May 18th meeting, the Board of Trustees approved much needed help for our Township’s seniors by supporting the Meals on Wheels efforts of the DuPage County Senior Citizens Council.

The not-for-profit DSCC delivers nutritionally balanced meals to hundreds of seniors across the Township on a regular basis, using trained volunteers who also perform valuable well-being checks. If needed, they also schedule follow-up services. This type of thoughtful interaction can decrease the sense of isolation and dependence that often accompanies old age.

This week Downers Grove Township Supervisor Mark Thoman delivered the approved $25,000 funding check to DSCC head Marylin Krolak. Supervisor Thoman commented, “Downers Grove Township leverages efficiencies via collaboration, cooperation, and coordination at every opportunity; from our Youth Services partnerships with schools, our Peer Jury diversion program utilized by all police departments in the Township, to the volunteer driven, non-profit FISH Pantry housed in our building that meets the food gap of those in need. These are some of the examples of how we work to meet a variety of needs through these approaches.

“Supporting the Meals on Wheels program, as administered and run by the DuPage Senior Citizens Council, allows older residents of the Township to age with dignity in their home. It’s a great ounce of prevention that’s extremely cost-effective on many levels. They (DSCC) save taxpayers dollars while efficiently providing a needed service benefitting our older residents. We are pleased to support their efforts for our township seniors.”
