On a crisp evening in early October, local community members, senior-related agencies, businesses, independent and assisted living residences, township staff and local officials came together to support township senior services such as the Dial-A-Ride program, while honoring an exceptional senior, Floyd Mizener.

Aspired Living of Westmont kindly hosted Oktoberfest on October 4th with delicious hors d’oeuvres, tasty desserts and a signature drink! As soft piano music serenaded the guests, sponsors were able to engage and network with all of those attending. Additionally, eleven gift baskets were raffled off to lucky winners! The event garnered just over $4000! FFDGTS is proud to say it had only one expense for valet services!

The evening would not have been complete had FFDGTS not honored a prominent senior within the township community, Dr. Floyd Mizener. Floyd was given an award as the V.I.P. Senior of the Year! Floyd has led an illustrious life as a leading optometrist responsible for cutting edge legislation, in the state of Illinois, regarding eye tests and driving for seniors. He has also achieved 60+ years as a Lyons Club member (still leading) and so much more. FFDGTS and Downers Grove Township chose to honor Floyd because of his unfailing dedication to civic duty and volunteerism. He has been a member of the Township Senior Advisory Committee for many years, and helps to educate the public through his own example.

At the young age of 93, Floyd continues to attend meetings, volunteer for events, lead activities and make connections with organizations that support seniors and veterans. Floyd is a proud veteran of WWII and served his country with pride. It was through his connection with Hal Burke, USS The Sullivans Organization, and the Tivoli Theater that we are bringing the true story of “The Fighing Sullivans” to the Tivoli Theater on November 13, (the day after Veteran’s Day) at 1:00pm. Hal Burke will be doing a brief presentation with a Q & A after the movie. We suggest that you spread the word and attend this wonderful event honoring our veterans. We salute you, Dr. Mizener. Your continuing legacy is awesome! Floyd Insert

Downers Grove Township and FFDGTS will continue to look for ways to support and honor our township seniors. After all, this is the fastest growing population in our township. We ask the public to support FFDGTS in all of its endeavors. There is a monthly fundraiser at local restaurants. Try one out. The next one is coming up on November 12-18th at the Country House in Clarendon Hills. FFDGTS gets 15% of all food sales, from those attending, during that whole week! Country House Shares Flyer

Finally, thanks to all who sponsored, attended and/or donated their time to the Oktoberfest Event. Special thanks to: Aspired Living Westmont, Eileen Fitzgerald, Community Bank of Downers Grove, Adolf Services, Robert Petranek- Coldwell Banker, Extended Care Consulting, Lacey Creek, Clemens Enterprises, Kathy Abbate and At Home With You.
